OFFALY
Offaly lies at the very heart of Ireland resting on the great central plain,
an area of distinctive bog land landscape formed millions of years ago, which
is only now being recognised for it's uniqueness. These can be explored by
way of cruises along the river Shannon and through a network of inland waterways
leading off the Grand Canal. Situated along the Shannon between Lough Derg
and Lough Ree, a remarkable monastic heritage can be seen in the extensive
ruins at Clonmacnoise. A sixth century monastery founded by St. Ciaran, it
was a centre of medieval learning and scholarly endeavour. Among the ruins
are churches, high crosses and a 12th Century round tower. Take in the treasures
of a more recent past at the magnificent Birr Castle and gardens or engage
in pleasurable outdoor activities such as fishing, golf and horse-riding.
